Maxwell Conditioning, Friday Sept 4th

Here is a little clip of what one of our circuits looked like yesterday morning. It was me, Saulo, Xande, Kron, and Rani with Steve Maxwell and his instruments of pain. We did a 12 minute warm-up with the kettle bells, then we did two 10 minute circuits. The clip you will see is the first circuit. The feeling you get when we are finished with one of Steve's work-outs is amazing. He really pushes you to just the right point. Enjoy!

Here is the other circuit:

Rafael, do you think there is any value in pure strength training for BJJ? Particularly in high weight and low reps.

I think it depends on what your trying to accomplish. If there isn't a tournament coming up and you want to try and gain some strength and maybe gain some weight too, then it could be good. If it is tournament season, I would stay away from it.

How far out from a tournament would be considered "tournament season" to you? I had a tournament last week and I backed off a little on the cardio to avoid burn out. But I have been noticing that while I have been improving in my cardio workouts, sometimes I get super-gassed at jiu-jitsu. It doesn't make sense.

By the way, I have been doing a lot of Martin Rooney's type of cardio from "Training for Warriors."

No tournament for 2 or 3 months. If there is a tournament in a month I wouldn't be doing hard lifting, just lifting to maintain. You'll get better at figuring out your body and what works for you, just keep working at it and pay attention to what gives you the best results.
